The Mediating Effects of Mindfulness and the Self-Silencing on the Relation Between Adult Attachment and Interpersonal Competence

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance on interpersonal competence and to verify the mediating effect of mindfulness and the self-silencing among college students. A sample of 350 college students were collected. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro 3.4.1. The results are as follows. First, the self-silencing specifically mediated the influence of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance on interpersonal competence. Second, mindfulness and the self-silencing had serial multiple mediation effects on the influence of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance on interpersonal competence. In other words, attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance not only directly affects interpersonal competence, but also indirectly through mindfulness and the self-silencing. The findings shows that attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance should be considered with focusing on mindfulness and the self-silencing to foster interpersonal competence. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
